Did you know Onam is one of India’s longest festivals? We only recently realised it too! Each day brings its own rituals, flavours, and that heartwarming feeling of togetherness. 🌸🍃
“Onam isn’t just a day, it’s a story that unfolds over 10 days!”
The absolute highlight? The Sadhya that beautiful, bountiful banana leaf spread that feels like a warm hug from tradition. The vibrant colors, the incredible array of flavors… it’s a feast for the senses. But here’s the thing… kids today? They look at all those curries and think, “Where are the snacks?” This is a common struggle for every parent who wants their child to appreciate tradition but also wants a fuss-free, happy mealtime.
We get it. It’s hard to get a little one to appreciate the subtle spice of an avial or the sour notes of a pulissery. So, how do we make this grand tradition feel just as special for their tiny taste buds?
Making the Sadhya a Fun Feast
You don't have to overhaul the entire menu to make it kid-friendly. Instead, try these simple, smart ideas that make the Sadhya a fun adventure for your little ones.
The Story on the Plate: Turn the Sadhya into a storytelling session! As you serve each dish, give it a fun name. The parippu becomes “King Mahabali’s favorite lentil soup.” The papadum is the “crispy crown.” Engaging their imagination can make them more likely to try something new.
The Sweet Start: Kids are naturally drawn to sweets. The Sadhya is no feast without the payasam, but why not offer a sweet appetizer they’ll love? You can serve bite-sized pieces of fruit or a few GubGub fruit melts on the leaf to give them a fun, fruity head start.
The Roll-Up Surprise: Forget serving a whole paratha on the side. Create a "Roti Roll-Up" by spreading some sweet, creamy paal payasam (rice pudding) and rolling it inside a small roti. This makes a finger-food they can easily manage. For a shortcut, our Mango Fruit Roll-Ups are a delicious and healthy alternative that are just as festive!
The Small Taste Test: Instead of overwhelming them with a little bit of everything, let them choose just a few curries to try. Use a small spoon to place a tiny dollop of a few selected dishes on their leaf, like the creamy olan or the sweet erissery.
The 'Gummy-Licious' Dessert: After they’ve done a great job trying the new flavors, they deserve a special treat. Offer them a small bowl of GubGub gummies! They’re a natural, preservative-free way to end the meal with a big smile.
This Onam, let’s keep the traditions alive, the plates full, and the snacks smart. Because every feast deserves a little extra joy! 💛
